Solon slams mañanita for NCR top cop: 'Aren't they ashamed of themselves?'

Bayan Muna party-list Representative Ferdinand Gaite on Wednesday slammed the mañanita for National Capital Region Police Office chief Police Major General Debold Sinas, saying it was another display of "double standards" in the implementation of lockdown protocols.

"Aren't they ashamed of themselves?" Gaite said in a statement.

"First, they were insensitive enough to have a huge birthday party amidst the lockdown. Second, they had the audacity to flaunt it in official social media pages of the PNP, putting in full display their apparent exemption from several lockdown measures including social distancing and prohibition of mass gatherings," he added.

Sinas' birthday celebration last May 8 drew flak as social distancing was allegedly not observed during the mañanita.

He also held a relief operation for Tondo, Manila residents where physical distancing was also not practiced.

Philippine National Police chief Police General Archie Gamboa, however, said he does see not any violation committed by Sinas.

"Una, walang party ang nangyari ang sabi ni General Sinas. Probably nagkaroon ng mañanita. Pero doon sa mañanita, ang sabi [ni] General Sinas is that in-observe pa rin nila 'yung mga social distancing," he said.

Gaite hit Gamboa for covering up for Siñas amid the "clear violations" committed whatever they wanted to call the event.

"This is yet another display of double standards in the application of lockdown restrictions. Ordinary people face instant arrests, violence or even bullets, while those in power can have parties whenever and wherever they want. They are literally getting their cake and eating it too," he said.

Instead of instantly absolving Sinas, Gaite said the PNP should look into the possible violations committed especially since photos suggest that there are.

"Let the PNP prove once and for all that there is no double standard in their enforcement of ECQ protocols," he said.

Gamboa has already directed the Internal Affairs Service to conduct a probe into the event, according to PNP spokesman Police Brigadier General Bernard Banac.—AOL, GMA News
