Teacher arrested over tweet to be charged in court for inciting to sedition

The public high school teacher arrested over his tweet offering P50-million for President Rodrigo Duterte's head will be charged with inciting to sedition in relation to cybercrime next week, an official said Thursday.

Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento said the case against Ronnel Mas will no longer undergo preliminary investigation before the Department of Justice and will be filed with a Zambales court.

The 25-year-old teacher, arrested Monday, will remain in the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) while awaiting court hearings, Malcontento said.

NBI agents in Dagupan tracked down and arrested Mas in Zambales over his tweet that said: "I will give P50 million reward kung sino makakapatay kay Duterte."

Apart from inciting to sedition, he was also presented for inquest for an alleged violation of the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials.

Inquests are proceedings in which prosecutors determine whether or not to file charges in court against persons who were arrested without a warrant.

In Malay, Aklan, police arrested a construction worker who made a social media post allegedly offering P100 million to anyone who could kill the president.

The NBI said it is also looking into social media users who had made apparent threats against Vice President Leni Robredo. —LDF, GMA News
