Galvez sees future lockdowns at barangay level, not region-wide

The Philippine government will localize the national action plan against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by implementing lockdowns at the barangay level, the chief implementer of the national plan against the illness said Tuesday.

In a televised meeting, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said that the plan will be implemented through the help of local government units (LGUs)

"Ang ginagawa po natin ngayon [...] baka hindi na tayo mag-declare ng lockdown per region but ang lockdown na lang natin nito by barangay," Galvez said.

"Ibig sabihin, paliitin na lang natin. Ang gagawin po natin is 'yung barangay na mayroong cases, 'yun po ang ila-lockdown natin para ma-preserve po natin 'yung ating economic po natin," he added.

According to Galvez, LGUs will follow guidelines given by the Inter-Agency Task Force.

"So 'yun lang po na mga barangay o kunyari, for example, may isang compound na apat na pamilya ang affected, 'yun po ang ila-lockdown natin. Hindi po natin hahayaan sila na makapagkaroon ng infections doon sa economic corridor natin," he said.

At present, the country has a total of 12,942 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 2,843 recoveries and 837 fatalities. — Joahna Lei Casilao/BM, GMA News
