Extension of Bayanihan law beyond June necessary, says Lacson

The Bayanihan to Heal as One Act (RA11469) must be extended beyond June to help the government address the continuing impact of COVID-19 on the country, according to Senator Panfilo Lacson on Thursday.

"I think it’s necessary. At the rate we’re going we cannot be out of this problem by June 24. The Bayanihan Act will expire June 24," Lacson said during an interview on ANC.

"I assume Malacanang and the executive branch, they are already preparing a draft legislation to allow the President to continue enjoying the powers of realigning the budget and all other powers we gave him under the Bayanihan Act, including exemptions from RA 9184 or Government Procurement Act," he added.

The Bayanihan to Heal as One Act was passed by Congress in a marathon session last March 23 to give President Rodrigo Duterte the authority to realign the national budget for COVID-19 response. It was given an initial effectivity of three months. Duterte signed it on March 25.

Senate President Vicente Sotto also suggested extending the validity of the measure to continue the distribution of emergency cash assistance to low-income families in the country which was among its key provisions. —Dona Magsino/KBK, GMA News
