COVID-19 RESPONSE

Cebu City, nine other areas to shift to GCQ —Roque

The cities of Cebu and Mandaue in the province of Cebu will also shift to general community quarantine (GCQ) on June 1 as with the rest of other areas which will transition from stricter anti-COVID-19 measures to more relaxed ones, Palace said Saturday.

“Ang Cebu at ang Mandaue City po ay nasa GCQ na rin,” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said during the Laging Handa public briefing.

Earlier, Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella appealed to the national government to place the city under GCQ instead of modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ).

“Our strategic community testing has already been completed and we are confident that the City of Cebu is ready to transition into general community quarantine," Labella said.

But the Inter-agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) had recommended that Cebu City should remain under MECQ beginning June 1 as it is the second epicenter of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Other areas that will shift to GCQ beginning June 1 until 15 include:

  • Pangasinan
  • Region II
  • Region III
  • Region IV-A
  • NCR and the municipality of Pateros
  • Region VII
  • Zamboanga City
  • Davao City

“Ito po ang napagkasunduan ng inyong IATF kahapon,” Roque  said. —LBG/KG, GMA News
