The Philippine National Police (PNP) deployed additional buses and troop carrier trucks to assist commuters facing transportation woes amid the general community quarantine in Metro Manila.

According to Directorate for Police Community Relations (DPCR) chief Police Major General Dionardo Carlos, a total of 12 vehicles were rolled out early Wednesday morning as part of the police's "Libreng Sakay" program.

Carlos said similar efforts are being done by police regional offices nationwide in coordination with local government units and other government agencies.

The police official ensured that physical distancing was observed in assisting Filipino commuters. He added that the PNP is also practicing the 50% capacity per bus or truck.

"It is our desire to ferry more people but we give premium to the health and safety of the public availing of these services," Carlos said.

Carlos also said the PNP would coordinate with the Office of Civil Defense to provide transportation service to frontliners too. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
