Philippine Army welcomes filing of complaints vs. cops who killed ex-soldier Ragos

The Philippine Army on Thursday welcomed the filing of a murder complaint against Quezon City cops who shot a former soldier in April over an alleged quarantine violation.

Army spokesman Colonel Ramon Zagala said the complaint filed against Police Major Sergeant Daniel Florendo and four other police trainees over the killing of former Corporal Winston Ragos is a welcome development toward justice.

“May this development be the first step in our quest of justice for Ragos and his family,” he said in a statement.

“Through this, we hope that we can at least honor his sacrifices to the nation he served, and raise awareness on the mental health issues our soldiers face,” Zagala added.

Earlier on Thursday, the National Bureau of Investigation filed complaints for murder, perjury, and planting of evidence against Florendo.

The police trainees who were manning the checkpoint on the day of Ragos’ death were also named as respondents.

The Army earlier ordered a check on soldiers’ mental health after Ragos’ family revealed that the slain veteran had schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder. -MDM, GMA News
