Heirs of 29 fallen medical frontliners have already received P1-M checks —DOH

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire on Saturday said the heirs of 29 medical frontliners who died while battling COVID-19 have already received their P1-million benefit checks.

Vergeire said the joint administrative order for the said benefit was signed earlier this week.

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III went to the heirs of 29 medical frontliners on Friday to give them the checks, Vergeire said during the Laging Handa public briefing.

"Kahapon po, dala-dala ang tseke, napuntahan na ni Secretary Duque at ni Usec. [Roger] Tong-An ang mga relatives ng ating mga kababayan na namatay because of COVID-19 at naibigay na ang mga tseke sa 29 heirs," she said.

Meanwhile, only the heirs of three more medical frontliners have yet to receive the said benefit. Vergeire said they may receive the checks on Saturday.

"Tatlo na lang ang gagawin natin ngayong araw para mukumpleto ang listahan natin at maibigay ang benepisyo na 'yan," she said.

The P100,000 compensation to public and private health workers who contracted COVID-19 while in the line of duty is also being prepared, Vergeire said.

The DOH official said as per their tally, 79 health workers who had severe COVID-19 symptoms will receive the benefit.

"With regards to those who had severe symptoms at mabibigyan ng P100,000, 'yung database namin na 79 workers ay nakaayos na rin po. Maybe in the coming days ay maibibigay din natin kaagad-agad itong kompensasyon na ito," Vergeire said.

The Bayanihan To Heal As One Act directed President Rodrigo Duterte to provide the said compensation.

At a briefing with Cabinet members aired on Friday, Duterte ordered Duque to form a new team to manage the distribution of the cash assistance to COVID-19-hit health workers. —KG, GMA News
