Some 6.4 million students have already enrolled in public and private schools nationwide for the upcoming academic year, the Department of Education said Monday.

In a televised briefing, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said 6,415,878 learners have signed up, as of Monday morning. The data included those in kindergarten, elementary, junior high school, senior high school, the alternative learning system as well as learners with disabilities.

“This has exceeded our expectations,” she said.

CALABARZON has the largest number of enrollees so far with 1,283,358, followed by the National Capital Region (895,406), Central Luzon (772,035), Central Visayas (566,168), and the Ilocos Region (508,372).

The Cordillera Administrative Region registered the smallest number of enrollees with 38,853.

“For the first two weeks, enrollment will be online, pinagbabawalan namin iyong mga teacher at mga staff na pumasok pati ang parents and children. They will have to register online,” Briones said.

“Tapos sa second half ng June, iyong iba na walang access sa connectivity o wala silang cellphone na magagamit o telepono na magagamit kasi puwede namang mag-cellphone, puwedeng sa TV, puwedeng sa iba’t ibang paraan or even sa radio kasi mayroon namang mga programs sa radio kung saan puwedeng mananawagan ay sa second half of June.”

The enrollment started on June 1 and will run until June 30. The opening of classes is on August 24. —AOL, GMA News
