DepEd’s Briones: Almost 10M students signed up on first eight days of enrollment

There are almost 10 million basic education learners who have so far enrolled for school year 2020-2021, according to Education Secretary Leonor Briones on Thursday.

During a Senate hearing, Briones said this enrollment turnout rate is equivalent to 36.26% of the Department of Education's (DepEd) projected enrollment for this year.

Of the total number, 577,695 enrolled in kindergarten, 4.8 million in elementary, 3.2 million in junior high school, and 1.09 million in senior high school.

In the alternative learning system, there were 73,870 who have enrolled. Some 27,700 learners with disabilities also signed up for the school year.

"The level of enrollment already achieved, 36% of projected enrollment, shows that the parents are cooperating, local governments are cooperating, teachers are cooperating in tracking the students," Briones said.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines pointed out earlier this week that more than half of those enrolled as of June 8 came from only three largely urbanized regions— Calabarzon, National Capital Region, and Central Luzon— with better access to remote enrollment.
