Customs seizes P2.7M in dollar bills hidden inside magazines from HK

Customs authorities have seized P2.7 million worth of US dollar bills inserted in pages of various magazines declared as "Chinese Cook Book Recipes" which entered the country last month.

In a statement on Sunday, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) said the shipments declared as "Chinese Cook Book Recipes" arrived from Hong Kong on May 25, 2020.

Upon closer examination on June 5, however, the shipment was found to contain $54,215 worth of banknotes inserted in the pages of seven different magazines.

The BOC did not give additional information on the sender and the consignee.

Broken down, the shipments contained 510 pieces of $100 bills, two pieces of $50 bills, four pieces of $20 bills, a piece of $10 bill, and five pieces of $5 bills.

A Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) has since been issued by District Collector Ruby Alameda for violation of the Customers Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA). —Jon Viktor Cabuenas/LBG, GMA News
