Airports allowed, prohibited by LGUs for commercial flights

More than 20 airports have been allowed by local government units (LGUs) to operate for commercial flights amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

In a Facebook post on Sunday, CAAP presented a list of airports which are allowed by their respective LGUs to have commercial flights. There was also a list of airports that have yet to receive the go-signal to operate.

“As of today, 14 June, there are 23 airports in the country whose Local Government Units (LGUs) have allowed the commercial operation of flights,” CAAP said.

“Meanwhile, 9 airports are set to start accepting commercial flights on later dates,” it added.

However, CAAP noted that some airports, while allowing commercial flights, are subject to different documentary and passenger LGU restrictions.

Meanwhile, there are 17 airports whose LGUs refuse to allow the operation of commercial flights.

Restrictions by LGUs on the operation of commercial flights have resulted in passengers getting stranded at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), with many of them ending up sleeping under the elevated expressway outside the airport as they waited for possible flights.

Some of them had scheduled flights that were canceled due to restriction of LGUs. --Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
