DLSU part-time faculty member axed over sexually harassing FB post vs. Hontiveros --report

By DONA MAGSINO, GMA News

A part-time faculty member at the De La Salle University (DLSU) will no longer be allowed to continue teaching in the institution after creating a malicious Facebook post against Senator Risa Hontiveros, according to its official campus paper.

In a story published by The Lasallian on Monday, it bared that a faculty member from the Ramon V. del Rosario College of Business (RVRCOB) made a social media post suggesting that Hontiveros must be sexually harassed behind bars.

"I recommend she (Hontiveros) teach the prisoners in Bilibid Prison not to rape. Closed-door session," the now-deleted post reportedly read.

The campus paper said the post surfaced after Hontiveros slammed the Lucban Municipal Police station's online reminder that girls should not wear short dresses to avoid being sexually harassed.

"There is no dress code for rape. Or for sexual harassment. Instead of teaching women how to dress, we should teach men not to rape," Hontiveros previously said.

An online petition at Change.org condemning the faculty's Facebook post against the senator garnered over 1,400 signatures among the DLSU community as of Monday afternoon.

The DLSU University Student Government also denounced the social media post of the faculty member.

"This behavior is one that we have no tolerance for, and does not reflect our values and morals as an institution. It is distasteful and offensive for anyone to suggest such a horrific act to happen to another person, especially to one of the leaders fighting for a safer society for the marginalized and the voiceless," it said in a statement.

"The professor will no longer teach in DLSU," it added as an update.

Citing information from RVRCOB President Nates Driz, the campus paper reported that the part-time faculty would no longer have his contract renewed and would no longer be teaching in the university next term.

"As the college president, I have the goal [of fighting] for the best interest of the students, and these comments perpetuate the culture of rape. There's no room for misogyny in DLSU," Driz was quoted as saying.

He added that the management is doing everything to make the faculty member accountable for his actions.

In a formal statement sent to the University Student Government, Marketing and Advertising Department chairperson Mary Julie Balabar said the behavior of the part-time professor, who had been with the university for the past seven years, has been called out after the incident.

"He apologized for his post and has taken it down. He mentioned [that] it was not his intention to insinuate harassment for Sen. Hontiveros nor promote the prevalent rape culture present today," Balabar said.

"We all decided not to renew his contract next term. Therefore, he will not be teaching with us starting this third term," she added.
