DepEd launches drop-box enrollment program for students with no internet

Amid the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Department of Education (DepEd) has launched a "drop-box" enrollment program for students with no access to the internet.

According to Mariz Umali's report on "24 Oras," children may be enrolled by submitting the necessary documents through drop boxes.

"Kasi hindi ko po talaga kabisado, kaya dito po ako nag-fill up sa form. Kasi wala po kami internet. Sayang naman po 'yung taon kung ii-stop po sila," said Margie Dagdag, who enrolled her two children at the Rosauro Almario Elementary School in Tondo.

The school usually gets around 8,000 enrollees. At present, there are already around 5,000 students who have enrolled: 3,000 online and 2,000 on the drop box enrollment system.

"Mahirap po talaga 'yung online. Siguro 20 percent lang ang merong gadget. They're still interested kasi talagang mas mahalaga ang edukasyon para sa mga anak," Lanie Cabanting, principal, said.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones said that almost 10 million students have enrolled online across the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic. — Joahna Lei Casilao/BM, GMA News
