NBI looking into rape threat vs. Frankie Pangilinan

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is looking into an online rape threat against Frankie Pangilinan, daughter of Senator Francis Pangilinan and actress Sharon Cuneta.

"Tinitingnan na namin, kino-collate na namin 'yung mga information, tama nga yung sinabi niyo, baka puwedeng i-invoke niya na identity theft or na-compromise lang 'yung account niya, kaya dino-document na namin," NBI cybercrime division chief Victor Lorenzo said on Dobol B sa News TV on Monday.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra earlier said Cuneta has reached out to him after a certain Sonny Alcos threatened to rape Frankie.

Frankie is known for starting the #HijaAko hashtag in response to TV and radio personality Ben Tulfo telling women to be "careful with the way you dress up" to avoid "inviting" rapists.

The hashtag trended on Twitter as people discussed victim blaming and shared their experiences of sexual assault.

Asked if Cuneta could file a complaint against the social media user who threatened her daughter if he is abroad, Guevarra said offended parties may do so if an "essential element" of the offense was committed in cyberspace, which he said is "virtually borderless."

"Should the complaint prosper, however, our courts must acquire jurisdiction over the person of the defendant before he could be tried," he said in a message to reporters. --Nicole-Anne C. Lagrimas/KBK, GMA News
