49.52% of expected students enrolled after three weeks of month-long enrollment —DepEd

More than 13.75 million students or around 49.52% of expected enrollees for School Year 2020-2021 have enrolled since the start of the month-long enrolment on June 1, the Department of Education said Tuesday.

“Umabot na sa 13,752,109 ang total na nag-enroll. Ito ay kalahati na ito sa ine-expect natin na mag-enroll for this year,” DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said in a public briefing.

Interested students have only one week to enroll for the coming school year which will be held under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Citing the total number of enrollees in 2019, the DepEd is expecting around 27.7 million students for the 2020-2021 school year.

"Bakit kalahati lang ang naka-enroll? This is because para sa walang access—kasi online ang enrollment natin for the first two weeks—sa ngayon drop boxes ang ginagamit natin,” Briones said.

DepEd set the first two weeks of June for online enrollment, while the other two weeks for "physical" enrollment.

“Sa mga bayan na walang connectivity [sa internet], may  mga drop boxes kung saan ang mga parent doon nila ilalagay ang enrollment forms ng kanilang mga anak,” Briones said.

According to Briones, local government units will assist the department in collecting the enrollment forms of the students.

The start of the 2020-2021 school year will be on August 24. Due to constraints tied to the COVID-19, the DepEd decided to resume classes through distance learning, where students do not have to go to school to participate in classes to avoid possible transmission of the virus.

The DepEd also removed around 60% of the curriculum to adjust for the remote learning approach this coming school year.

The department has been preparing for ways to deliver education to students through self-learning modules, broadcast media, and the internet. --KBK, GMA News
