Education Secretary Leonor Briones on Tuesday discouraged the use of unaccredited education materials as a tool to teach students amid the implementation of distance learning this coming school year.

In a public briefing on Tuesday, Briones noted that these materials did not undergo the assessment of the Department of Education (DepEd).

“Hindi ‘yan dumaan sa ating curriculum review kasi meron tayong basic curriculum na kung ano ang dapat na learning competencies na matuto ang bata,” she said.

Briones made the statement after reports of education materials being sold online.

“Ang importante ‘yung content kasi hindi naman natin nare-review. Hindi natin makikita kung tugma ‘yan…Para sa akin, maraming harm na magagawa ‘yung unaccredited,” she added.

Briones cited an incident about a published textbook with information about the "Banana" Rice Terraces instead of Banaue Rice Terraces. She noted that the book was not from the DepEd.

“May logo pa ng DepEd na libro quoting Banana Rice Terraces, e hindi naman sa amin 'yun,” she said.

Due to constraints tied to the COVID-19, DepEd decided to resume classes through distance learning, where students do not have to go to school to participate in classes to avoid possible transmission of the virus.

The DepEd removed around 60% of the curriculum to adjust for the remote learning approach this coming school year, which was scheduled to start on August 24.

Also, the department has been preparing for ways to deliver education to students through self-learning modules, broadcast media, and the internet.

According to DepEd, it will provide printed copies of self-learning modules for students. — BM, GMA News
