Palace says no ‘fashion show’ at Duterte’s 5th SONA

No politicians and guests in stylish ensembles will strut the red carpet for President Rodrigo Duterte’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) this year.

Duterte’s spokesperson Harry Roque said Tuesday that the President’s fifth SONA will be different as the government has banned large gatherings to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“I can confirm it will not be the same SONA that we are used to. Siyempre po wala na iyong mga madamihang mga opisyales na nag-a-attend, wala na iyong fashion show na pagandahan ng suot at tingin ko po kakaunti lang ang mag-a-assemble sa Kongreso,” Roque said in a televised briefing.

Lawmakers, their spouses, other government officials and guests graced the red carpet in formal wear before the SONA in previous years.

Roque could not say if Duterte will deliver his address inside the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City or through video conference.

“Mayroon pa po kaming mga plano na hinahanda. Baka naman sorpresahin namin kayo,” he said.
