221 prisoners granted parole amid COVID-19 crisis –Duterte

At least 221 convicted prisoners have been granted parole in line with the government’s objective to decongest detention facilities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his report to Congress on Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte said the parole for 221 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) was approved by the Board of Pardons and Parole (BPP).

A person granted parole must fulfill the conditions of the provisional liberty otherwise he will be brought back to prison to finish his sentence.

The government earlier said those who will be released on parole will have to undergo quarantine at a facility in their respective penal farm and colony before being freed.

Duterte also said the BPP recommended the grant of executive clemency to 119 PDLs.

Under the Constitution, the President is empowered to grant reprieves, commutations, and pardons, and remit fines and forfeitures, to prisoners after conviction by final judgment. —Virgil Lopez/KBK, GMA News
