Face-to-face classes with social distancing possible in some provinces, says Binay

Senator Nancy Binay on Wednesday said face-to-face classes may be possible in some parts of the country with relatively lower risk of COVID-19 transmission.

"We can do the face-to-face in some areas. Maybe not NCR kasi nga malaki ang problema natin sa COVID. For example Siquijor, where there is no COVID case," Binay said in an interview on ANC.

"Baka puwede they can meet up once a week doon sa covered court kung saan hiwalay-hiwalay 'yung mga estudyante," she added.

The senator, nonetheless, said these physical classes must be done with social distancing and other precautionary measures.

She made the suggestion as she expressed doubts that the self-learning modules would be effective, given that some students really need the actual guidance and supervision of teachers.

The Department of Education, on the other hand, said teachers and community learning facilitators may still call or visit struggling learners to assist them in answering the printed modules.

Senator Imee Marcos is also pushing for face-to-face classes in selected areas, especially those which are low-risk and where internet, TV, and radio accessibility is poor.

The Palace said President Rodrigo Duterte—who initially said he will not allow physical classes until a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available—may be "charmed" by Marcos to change his mind.

The upcoming school year is set to open on August 24. — BM, GMA News
