Record-high 2,539 new COVID-19 cases push Philippines’ total over 50,000

The Philippines’ coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases topped 50,000 on Wednesday after the Department of Health (DOH) reported a record-high 2,539 more infections—1,922 “fresh” or newly validated and 617 reported late—bringing the total to 50,359.

Total recoveries also rose to 12,588 after 202 more patients recovered from the respiratory illness, while the death toll climbed to 1,314 with five new fatalities.

The Philippines still has the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases across Southeast Asia between Indonesia with 68,079 infections and Singapore with 45,140.

Fresh cases also reached a new record-high, 883 of which are from Metro Manila, 369 are from Region VII, while the 670 other patients came from various areas nationwide.

Among the fresh cases, 883 are from Metro Manila, 369 are from Region VII, while the 670 other patients came from various areas nationwide.

Among the late cases, 183 are from Metro Manila, 74 are from Region VII, while the remaining 360 are spread out across the country.

There are also 36,457 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine.

The DOH also removed 53 duplicate cases from the total tally of infections.

The department noted an increase in cases in the Metro Rail Transit and a construction site, as well as continuous clustering in several barangays.

“The event-based surveillance report showed the following: NCR had 6 new barangays with clustering, 1 in Cebu City, 1 in Mandaue City, 1 in Palawan, and 1 in Albay,” it said.

The DOH added that its reporting of new cases was delayed by hours on Wednesday due to the transition to an automated system.

“Over the last few days we have added more encoders and trained and engaged our regions and their respective regional epidemiology surveillance units to use the COVID KAYA app,” the department said.

“As we get more data, it necessitates more filtering out duplicate entries due to the increase of reporting units using the app. We are continuously streamlining the process,” it added.

As of July 7, the Philippines has 58 certified polymerase chain reaction facilities and 20 GeneXpert laboratories that have tested a total of 783,680 individuals.

Meanwhile, 1,306 or 43.26 percent of intensive care unit beds for COVID-19 patients nationwide are currently occupied while 1,989 or 25.04 percent of mechanical ventilators are in use.—LDF, GMA News
