President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday welcomed the commissioning of the country’s first missile-capable warship, saying it signaled a “new era of development” for the Philippine Navy.

Duterte was not present at the commissioning of BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) held at the Alava Wharf in Subic, Zambales although he gave a video message to mark the occasion.

“Today is the beginning of a new era of development and transformation for our Philippine Navy as we witness the commissioning of Barko ng Republika ng Pilipinas Jose Rizal,” he said.

He also extended his “deepest gratitude and appreciation” to the Navy “for always delivering the highest standard of service to our country and our people.”

“I am hopeful that you shall likewise be doubling the passion and commitment you have already manifested in ensuring the peace and progress truly deserved by our country,” Duterte said.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, South Korea’s Ambassador to the Philippines Han Dong-man and other Philippine military officials witnessed the handover, christening, and commissioning ceremony.

Built by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the BRP Jose Rizal is the country’s first multi-mission frigate capable of anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and electronic warfare operations, the Navy said.

The vessel, which arrived in Subic on May 23 from South Korea, has a maximum designed speed of 25 knots, a cruising speed of 15 knots and a range of 4,500 nautical miles.

The second frigate procured from HHI, BRP Antonio Luna, was expected to be delivered in the next six months.

The Navy emphasized that the acquisition of these missile-capable frigates would strengthen its ability to safeguard the Philippines' maritime territory. — DVM, GMA News
