Gov't targets 50 new quarantine facilities in next 3 weeks

The Philippine government targets to put up 50 more quarantine facilities in the next three weeks, given the rising number of confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the country.

According to chief isolation czar and Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar, the government is now ramping up its isolation facilities.

"Ang target namin in the next three weeks magtatayo kami ng additional 50 quarantine facilities and we can expect na malaki ang madadagdag sa ating kapasidad para sa ating mga COVID patients," he said in a public briefing on Monday.

Villar said there are currently a number of quarantine facilities under construction -- 129 regional evacuation centers.

There are 11 facilities under construction in Region 7 (Central Visayas), 16 in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas), 20 in Region 10 (Northern Mindanao), and three in Region 12 (Soccsksargen).

At present, Villar said there are 52,223 available beds in government isolation facilities under the Ligtas COVID Centers.

The Ligtas COVID Centers are Local Isolation and General Treatment Areas, community-managed facilities within a barangay, municipality, city or province, where contact, suspect, probable, and confirmed cases of COVID-19 with mild symptoms stay.

The Philippines on Monday morning reported 2,214 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total to 56,259. This includes 1,534 deaths and 16,046 recoveries.—AOL, GMA News
