The Medical City at full-capacity for COVID-19 patients

By JAMIL SANTOS, GMA News

The Medical City in Pasig City announced Tuesday that it has already reached full capacity for COVID-19 patients.

"Please be advised that despite efforts to reorganize and augment our facilities and manpower, The Medical City has reached FULL CAPACITY of COVID-19 patient allocated beds as of today, 14 July 2020," TMC chief medical officer Rafael Claudio said in a statement.

"We are fully aware that this is a looming problem, but we could not go beyond our capacity to take care of COVID-19 patients without posing serious risks to everyone - both the patients (COVID and non-COVID) and our hospital staff," he added.

Claudio said the hospital management also does not wish to compromise its service to its general patients who have no less serious medical needs and now comprise majority of their case lead.

"We appeal for your understanding and recommend considering other institutions for critically-ill COVID-19 patients," the statement read, as the hospital is closely coordinating with the Pasig City government for the management of its COVID-19 patients.

TMC will be ready to facilitate endorsement "if and when we can" with its public-private partner Pasig City Children's Hospital as a COVID center for "moderate" cases, according to Claudio.

Claudio assured the public that the hospital's quality of care "remains uncompromised" as they secure their facilities allocated for non-COVID-19 cases, which are still open.

"Their health needs are just as urgent and important," he said, while at the same time emphatizing with COVID-19 patients.

On Monday, three private hospitals in the country — St. Lukes Medical Center in Quezon City, its branch in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City, and Makati Medical Center (MMC) — said they have reached their full capacity of allocated intensive care unit (ICU) beds for COVID-19 patients.

The Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines, Inc. said Tuesday many of their members are nearing their full capacity for COVID-19 cases amid the increase in the number of infected patients.
