PNP sets July 19 as deadline for installing motorcycle back-riding shields

Motorcycle riders have until July 19 to install the required barriers for back-riding with their spouses or live-in partners amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Joint Task Force COVID Shield said Tuesday.

Task Force chief Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar said motorcycle riders may choose between the shield prototypes made by the Bohol Provincial Government and ride-hailing app Angkas.

“We will continue monitoring and warning those without barriers while citing or apprehending those with other violations,” Eleazar said in a statement.

Eleazar added that PNP chief Police General Archie Gamboa ordered cops manning quarantine control points to disseminate information about the July 19 deadline.

“The set of rules for motorcycle back-riding is a balance between safety and the necessity of transportation. Our motorists have long requested for this and now that it was finally granted, please do not abuse it,” he said.

A motoring expert earlier warned that the shield design may cause the rider to lose control of the vehicle since it will affect aerodynamics.

Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla likewise slammed the shield as “dangerous” and “inconvenient.”

In response to criticisms, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said the safety of the motorcycle was ultimately up to the rider.  — Julia Mari Ornedo/BM, GMA News
