The Department of Education (DepEd) has reported that of of the 20,220,000 who have enrolled for the school year,  200,000 to 250,000 students are from private schools, with July 15 set as the deadline for enrollment for public schools.

Interviewed on Dobol B sa News TV on Wednesday, Undersecretary Tonisito Umali said that of the more than 20 million students listed, 19,145,129 are in public schools while 1,050,437 are enrolled in private schools.

Umali said the figure from private schools is still expected to increase as others are yet to submit their reports.

About 27.5 to 28 million students have enrolled last school year. Of the number, 22.5 million were in public schools.

Umali noted the decline of enrollment in private schools. "Nasa halos 25% lamang po 'yan 'yung numerong nabanggit ko (1,050,437) doon sa last year's enrollment figures natin sa private schools," he said.

"Pero naniniwala po kami na tataas pa po 'yan dahil baka hindi pa po nagre-report lahat," Umali added.

Meanwhile, the figure from public schools is now at 84.8% of the enrollment figure last year.

"Meron po kaming naitala na humigit kumulang 200,000 to 250,000 who transferred from private to public schools," Umali said, as he claimed the quality of public education has improved with the DepEd's campaign of delivery of quality basic education.

However, Umali also considered the COVID-19 situation as one factor of the transfer of students from private schools to public schools.

"Ang nakikita po natin, dahil marami po tayong kababayan na marami pong kinakaharap na pagsubok sa kanila pong kita, 'yun po ang isa sigurong dahilan kung bakit po naglilipatan itong ilang mga bata mula sa pribado patungong pampublikong paaralan," he said.

Over 20, 000 enrollees

Meanwhile, at the Pre-SONA Forum on Wednesday, DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones announced a total of 20,220,507 enrollees this school year.

"As of this morning, practically three-fourths of our enrollees last year have returned," Briones said.

Those who enrolled for the Alternative Learning System totalled to 257,220, despite of their adjustments to the new situation due to COVID-19, Briones said.

Briones said the DepEd is not insisting on students to go online with their learning with the postponement of face-to-face classes.

"Kung hindi puwede ang online, ang sabi namin, andiyan ang telebisyon, nandiyan ang radyo," the DepEd secretary said.

If radio, television, online and other platforms are still unavailable for some students, they could go for printed modular materials prepared by DepEd and to be distributed by schools with the help of LGUs, Briones added.

"Hindi pinipilit ang mga bata na mag-online sila kung hindi talaga puwede ang online dahil maraming ibang paraan na matuturuan sila without necessarily going online," she said. —LBG/KBK, GMA News
