DND chief: Some AFP modernization projects moved so budget could be used in efforts vs. COVID-19

The Department of National Defense has returned a total of P19.3 billion from its budget to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to assist in the government's effort to curb COVID-19 pandemic, DND chief Delfin Lorenzana said on Wednesday.

At a pre-SONA forum and press conference, Lorenzana said P9.4 billion of that amount was initially allotted for the modernization programs of the military.

He said some of the projects were moved to later years so that the budget could instead be used in fighting the disease. Lorenzana did not specify the programs.

"Itong mga projects ng modernization na natanggalan ng pera ay naiurong natin sa mga susunod na taon kasi hindi naman sila masyadong kritikal sa ating misyon..." Lorenzana said.

"Ito ang naibalik sa DBM, P19.3 billion and out of that P9.4 billion para sa modernization," he added.

Earlier, the DBM bared that as of June 24, a total of P374.89 billion has been released to fund various COVID-19 interventions. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
