Briones: Grammar error on DepEd TV 'should not be allowed to happen again'

Education Secretary Leonor Briones on Thursday said the grammatical error seen in an English lesson aired on DepEd TV is something that "should not be allowed to happen again."

This, as she explained that the error — brought to the public's attention by a communications skills trainer through Facebook — happened in the process of digitizing the curriculum for TV.

"Na-trace na namin anong nangyari sa dry run na 'yun. Ang material galing sa aming curriculum group tapos in-input ng aming technical people. Nagkaroon doon ng error sa pag-transfer at saka pagkopya," Briones said in a televised Palace briefing.

"Ang original, walang error. It was the transferring to the video or the digital form na there was this typographical error and it should not be allowed to happen again."

The said error in the Grade 8 English lesson went viral on social media. The Facebook post contained a picture of a question which read “Tagaytay City is known for wonderful picturesque of the majestic Mount Taal. What does picturesque mean?”

Citas Aquino, the communication skills trainer who exposed the error, said the sentence is “grammatically incorrect.”

Aside from the sentence, Aquino also criticized the choice of words on the supposed definition of picturesque.

“What does picturesque mean? Charming, running, ruined, perhaps. Even the choices of words do not even have any kind of connection with each other,” she said.

Briones said DepEd's dry run of broadcasting the materials has served its purpose, despite the incident.

"Kaya mabuti na mayroon tayong dry run para makikita kaagad kung ano mga possible problems ang lalabas. So, nag-institute na kami ng control measures na hindi na 'yun mauulit," she said.

Without face-to-face classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Filipino learners will be using various alternative platforms such as TV, radio, internet, and self-learning modules for studying for School Year 2020-2021, which is set to open on August 24. KBK, GMA News
