Philippines’ COVID-19 cases surpass 150,000 with 6,216 new infections

The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines surpassed 150,000 on Friday after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 6,216 new infections, bringing the total to 153,660.

This marks the third biggest single-day tally of new cases, the third time this month to have more than 6,000 new cases, and the third consecutive day where over 4,000 new cases were reported.

Meanwhile, the provinces of cities with the highest number of new cases are the National Capital Region with 3,848, Laguna with 302, Rizal with 242, Cavite with 240, and Bulacan with 178.

A total of 82 cases were also removed from the total case count.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries increased to 71,405 with 1,038 new cases while 16 new fatalities brought the nationwide death toll to 2,442.

Among the new deaths, eight or 50% occurred in August, four or 25% in July, three or 19% in April, and one or 6% in May.

There are also 79,813 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine. Of this, 91.1 percent are mild, 7.3 percent are asymptomatic, 0.6 percent are severe, and 1.0 percent are in critical condition.

At present, the Philippines has 79 certified polymerase chain reaction facilities and 27 GeneXpert laboratories that have tested a total of 1,829,489 individuals.

Fifty-one percent of intensive care unit beds for patients are occupied, while 30 percent of ventilators are being used.

As the number of cases continues to rise, the Department of Education on Friday announced that President Rodrigo Duterte has approved its recommendation to move the opening of School Year 2020-2021 from August 24 to October 5.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Sputnik V, the first COVID-19 vaccine to receive regulatory approval, could be available for commercial use in the country by April 2021. -MDM, GMA News
