9-month Avigan trials in Philippines start Monday — DOH

The clinical trials of Japanese anti-flu drug Avigan on COVID-19 patients in the Philippines will start on Monday, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the proponent and overseers of the trials had informed them that the project will start on August 17.

The Avigan tablets will be tested on 100 patients in the Philippines. The government has received 199,000 tablets from Japan.

Vergeire said the trials will be implemented in Philippine General Hospital, Sta. Ana Hospital, Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital and Quirino Memorial Medical Center.

"We will start start with these four hospitals, but of course mag-eexpand pa 'yang list of hospitals na yan for us to be able to have these 100 patients na sinabi na allocated na drugs coming from the Japanese government," the official said at a virtual press briefing.

The project will run for nine months, after which the Philippines will submit results, she said. — Nicole-Anne C. Lagrimas/RSJ, GMA News
