Philippines’ COVID-19 cases top 194,000 as deaths breach 3,000

The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines leapt to 194,252 on Monday after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 4,686 new infections.

Metro Manila still logged the highest number of new cases at 2,519, followed by Laguna with 286, Cavite with 218, Bulacan with 189, and Rizal with 179.

Among the newly reported infections, 4,045 or 86 percent caught COVID-19 in the past 14 days.

Meanwhile, the total number of recoveries rose to 132,042 after 729 more patients recovered from the respiratory illness.

The death toll also climbed to 3,010 with 13 new fatalities, six of whom died in August, six in July, and one in June.

The remaining 59,200 are active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, 91.5 percent of which are mild, 6.1 percent are asymptomatic, 1 percent are severe, and 1.4 percent are in critical condition.

The DOH said figures reported on Monday were based on data submitted by 95 out of the 109 operational laboratories. It also removed 35 duplicate cases from the total tally of infections.

As of August 23, the Philippines had 109 licensed laboratories that tested over 2.1 million individuals while 49 percent of COVID-19 intensive care unit beds nationwide were occupied and 28 percent of mechanical ventilators were in use.

Earlier on Monday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said around 3,000 additional health workers were still needed on the frontlines.

She also said that contact tracing efforts were being hampered by incomplete case investigation forms. —LDF, GMA News
