Lorenzana wants probe of pro-Duterte group behind call for revolutionary gov't

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana wants the pro-Duterte group behind the initiatives for a revolutionary government investigated, saying its moves were illegal and unconstitutional.

"They should be investigated," Lorenzana said referring to the members of the Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte - National Executive Coordinating Committee (MRRD-NECC) .

The group reportedly invited government officials to discuss its proposed establishment of revolutionary government.

"It is illegal and unconstitutional. As I said, we have a popularly elected President that still enjoys about 80% approval rating," Lorenzana told reporters.

Lorenzana has said that the Department of National Defense was not supporting the group's call.

In a separate statement, the Armed Forces of the Philippines also assured the public that it would not support the call for a revolutionary government.

"It’s very clear to every soldier, airman, sailor, and marine that our unequivocal fidelity and unwavering loyalty is to the Constitution and to the flag that represents our people and the state," AFP spokesman Major General Edgard Arevalo said.

He said the military would continue to uphold its sacred obligation of protecting the people and securing the state.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government, for its part, said the matter was not coordinated to the agency.

According to DILG spokesman Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya, the call was ill-timed because the national government is focused on fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque already also said the government is focused in addressing the health crisis. -NB, GMA News
