Construction jobs will be in demand based on 2021 budget —DOLE

More jobs in the construction sector will be opened based on the allocation for the Build, Build, Build Program in the proposed 2021 national budget,  a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) official said Wednesday.

Interviewed on GMA News’ Unang Balita, DOLE Assistant Secretary Dominique Tutay pointed out that the track of the 2021 budget would mostly benefit the construction sector.

“Kung titingnan natin yung track ng pagba-budget ng pamahalaan next year and moving forward, karamihan po noon ay paukol  doon sa construction sector,” Tutay said.

With the completed infrastructures under the building program of the administration, Tutay said more investors are expected to engage in the country even after the pandemic.

Tutay added that "high-level" jobs in information and communications technology and business processing management will remain in demand.

Aside from these, Tutay noted that the efforts in running the agriculture sector should continue to secure food supply as well as improve the skills of the concerned workers.

On Tuesday, the Department of Budget and Management submitted to the House of Representatives the 2021 National Expenditure Program (NEP), proposing a national budget of P4.506 trillion.

Based on the proposal, the education sector will receive the biggest chunk of the budget, with a total of P754.4 billion. The Department of Public Works and Highways follows with P667.3 billion.

The Department of Transportation, Department of Agriculture, and also DOLE are among the top 10 agencies with the highest budget allocations.

Amid the pandemic, Tutay admitted that the job opportunities are limited in the labor market. However, she said the economy will be revived when the vaccine for COVID-19 becomes available.

“Hindi po ganun kadami ang job opportunities ngayon sa labor market  because of the pandemic ,” she said.

“Pero aasahan naman po natin kapag naging maayos na po at nagkaroon na ng vaccine ay tuloy-tuloy na po ang pagsigla ng atin pong ekonomiya,” she added. —LBG, GMA News
