Philippines logs 4,284 more COVID-19 cases, over 22,000 new recoveries

The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines leapt to 217,396 on Sunday after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 4,284 new infections, marking the fifth straight day in which more than 3,000 new cases were reported.

Metro Manila still logged the highest number of new infections with 2,207 cases, followed by Laguna with 327, Cavite with 191, Batangas with 161, and Rizal with 147.

Among the newly reported cases, 88 percent or 3,779 contracted COVID-19 in the past 14 days.

Meanwhile, the total number of recoveries rose to 157,403 after 22,319 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease.

The DOH earlier said it would report time-based recoveries every Sunday as part of its “Oplan Recovery” initiative, where asymptomatic and mild COVID-19 cases are re-tagged as recovered after completing a 14-day quarantine without developing symptoms.

The death toll also climbed to 3,520 with 102 new fatalities, 78 of whom died in August, 21 in July, two in June, and one in April.

The remaining 56,473 are active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, 91.3 percent of which are mild, 6.1 percent are asymptomatic, 1.1 percent are severe, and 1.6 percent are in critical condition.

The DOH said figures reported on Sunday were based on data submitted by 100 out of the 110 operational laboratories. It also removed 19 duplicate cases from the total tally of infections.

As of August 29, the Philippines had 113 licensed laboratories that had tested over 2.3 million individuals while 49 percent of intensive care unit beds for COVID-19 patients nationwide were occupied and 29 percent of mechanical ventilators were in use. — BM, GMA News
