New system causes confusion as voter registration resumes

Voter registration for the 2022 elections resumed on Tuesday, September 1, amid the community quarantine protocols being implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although some registrants complained of confusion with the new system.

According to Mai Bermudez's report on Unang Balita, some registrants were seen outside the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Arroceros, Manila even before it opened.

Health and safety protocols, like social distancing, were strictly observed. Body temperature were also taken before entry to the premises.

A "No face mask and face shield, no entry" policy was also enforced. Registrants will only be allowed to remove their masks and face shields when their photos are taken for the capturing of biometrics data.

Applicants were also advised to download the application form from www.comelec.gov.ph and manually fill it out before going to the Comelec office.

Some registrants, however, complained that the system lacked order, according to a separate report on Dobol B sa News TV by Isa Avendaño Umali.

Some were not able to pre-register Facebook since they did not have a Facebook account. Some were not aware that pre-registration was required.

Senior citizens, who are vulnerable to COVID-19, were also reportedly not allowed at the premises as per guidelines by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF).

The nationwide voter registration period started on January 20. It will run until September 30, 2021, in preparation for the May 2022 elections. However, it was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. KBK, GMA News
