Philippines sees 2,839 more COVID-19 cases, 23,074 new recoveries

The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines leapt to 237,365 after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 2,839 new infections on Sunday, the second straight day in which less than 3,000 new cases were reported.

Metro Manila still recorded the highest number of new infections at 1,170, followed by Negros Occidental with 195, Laguna with 190, Cavite with 182, and Rizal with 154.

Eighty-one percent or 2,302 of the newly reported cases contracted COVID-19 in the past 14 days.

Meanwhile, total recoveries rose to 184,687 after 23,074 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease.

it would report time-based recoveries every Sunday under its “Oplan Recovery” initiative, where asymptomatic and mild COVID-19 cases are re-tagged as recovered after completing a 14-day quarantine without developing symptoms. 

The death toll also climbed to 3,875 with 85 new fatalities, 29 of whom died in September, 33 in August, while the rest died between March and June.

The remaining 48,803 are active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, 88.6 percent of which are mild, 8 percent are asymptomatic, 1.4 percent are severe, and 2 percent are in critical condition.

As of September 5, the Philippines had 117 licensed laboratories that had tested over 2.6 million individuals while 48 percent of COVID-19 intensive care unit beds nationwide were occupied and 29 percent of mechanical ventilators were in use. — LA, GMA News
