3,281 new cases bring Philippines’ COVID-19 tally to 241,987

The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines rose to 241,987 after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 3,281 new infections on Tuesday, breaking the three-day streak of less than 3,000 new cases reported daily.

Metro Manila still logged the highest number of new infections at 1,420, followed by Cavite with 263, Negros Occidental with 204, Laguna with 197, and Rizal with 196.

Eighty-nine percent or 2,932 of the newly reported cases contracted COVID-19 in the past 14 days.

The DOH said new cases reported on Tuesday were based on data submitted by 81 of the 115 operational laboratories.

Meanwhile, total recoveries rose to 185,178 after 286 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease.

The death toll also climbed to 3,916 with 26 new fatalities.

The remaining 52,893 are active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, 88.6 percent of which are mild, 8.2 percent are asymptomatic, 1.3 percent are severe, and 1.9 percent are in critical condition.

As of September 7, the Philippines had 117 licensed laboratories that had tested over 2.6 million individuals while 49 percent of COVID-19 intensive care unit beds nationwide were occupied and 27 percent of mechanical ventilators were in use.

President Rodrigo Duterte declared on Monday night that the Philippines had already flattened the curve of infections, with Health Secretary Francisco Duque III adding that new cases in Metro Manila dropped by 35 percent.

The government has also approved the use of antigen COVID-19 tests as a requirement for asymptomatic tourists as well as tourists who develop symptoms upon arrival at their destination.—LDF, GMA News
