Pemberton poses for mugshots after being pardoned by Duterte

The Bureau of Corrections on Tuesday released mugshots of convicted killer Joseph Scott Pemberton, a day after he was granted an absolute pardon for the death of a transgender Filipina in 2014.

Jennifer Laude, 26, was found dead in the bathroom of a motel in Olongapo City on October 11, 2014.

Pemberton, a US Marine, was convicted of homicide in 2015.

On Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte granted Pemberton an absolute pardon, saying that he was treated unfairly and that his behavior while detained was not duly monitored by Philippine authorities for good conduct time credits.

A court in Olongapo had ordered the release of Pemberton despite only being five years into his prison term of six years to 10 years.

BuCor later suspended Pemberton's release after the Laude family appealed against it. — Joahna Lei Casilao/BM, GMA News
