Pemberton gets NBI clearance ahead of deportation

US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton on Friday secured a clearance from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), a requirement before his deportation.

A team from the NBI led by Chief Ronald Aguto of the International Operations Division personally supervised the processing of the requirements for Pemberton’s NBI clearance.

Deputy Director Ferdinand Lavin said the team took Pemberton’s photograph and digital fingerprints.

Lavin said requiring Pemberton to get an NBI clearance was part of protocol for all deportees before they are allowed to leave the country.

This is to verify if the deportee is facing other complaints in the country.

Pemberton received his release papers as the Bureau of Corrections formally transferred his custody to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) for deportation.

Despite the transfer of custody, Pemberton, convicted of homicide for the killing of Filipino transgender woman Jennifer Laude in 2014, will remain at his detention facility inside Camp Aguinaldo until he is deported.

The BI earlier said it will complete deportation proceedings after he is released from BuCor custody.

Pemberton was ordered deported for being an "undesirable alien" three months before his conviction in 2015. -MDM, GMA News
