BI releases photos of Pemberton's deportation

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Sunday released photos of US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton taken at Camp Aguinaldo before he was brought to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport for his deportation.

Clad in gray shirt and black pants, Pemberton was brought out of his detention cell in Camp Aguinaldo on Sunday morning.

Flanked by BI personnel, the US soldier remained in handcuffs when he boarded a white van which was to take him to the airport.

Escorted by US military personnel in civilian clothes, US embassy personnel and Philippine BI agents, Pemberton then boarded a US military aircraft parked at the NAIA Terminal 3.

He was accompanied on the plane by US military personnel.

The plane took off the runway of NAIA Terminal 3 at 9:14 a.m., the BI said.

The BI said Pemberton, who was convicted of homicide in 2015 for the killing of Filipino transgender Jennifer Laude in 2014, was successfully deported on Sunday morning.

As a consequence of the deportation order against him, Pemberton has been placed on the BI’s blacklist, perpetually banning him from coming back,” said BI Commissioner Jaime Morente.

“His criminal case is separate from his immigration case,” said Morente.

“The Bureau saw that he is a risk to public safety, having been found guilty of the crime. Hence he was tagged as an undesirable alien, and will be expelled from the Philippines,” he added.

Pemberton was released by virtue of the absolute pardon given to him by President Rodrigo Duterte just over five years into his service of a six-to-10-year prison sentence.
