Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Camilo Pancratius Cascolan on Monday expressed support for the government's decision to reduce physical distancing in public transport vehicles.

"We need to adjust already. Kailangan na nating magkaroon ng innovations. 'Di porke't sinabing bawal 'yan, bawal...  eh pag-aralan ninyong mabuti," Cascolan said at a press briefing.

"We will come up with innovations and other initiatives so that we would be able to better our relationships and our services to the public," he added.

The initial optimization of the physical distancing measure in public transport vehicles from one meter to .75 meters among commuters took effect on Monday, September 14.

According to Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, the distance will further be reduced to 0.5 meters after two weeks and to 0.3 meters after another two weeks.

This measure raised concerns among commuters. But according to DOTr Undersecretary Artemio Tuazon, this new regulation is based on studies of experts in railways and medical fields.

Based on the recommendation of the World Health Organization, a distance of at least one meter should be observed to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

The Department of Health advised the public to be “extra vigilant” against COVID-19 amid the new protocol. —KG, GMA News
