DepEd eyes hiring 65k teachers, other personnel in 2021

The Department of Education (DepEd) will hire more than 65,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel by 2021, according to Undersecretary Jess Mateo.

In a budget hearing on Tuesday, Mateo said that the department has a total of 988,567 positions.

“The filled-up positions is 932,760 and the unfilled is 55,807 or five percent po…Ang nakalagay po doon sa  positions namin sa (2021 National Expenditures Program) budget na sinubmit  ay 10,000,” he said.

Mateo noted that DepEd is actually aiming to open more new positions to fulfill a better student-teacher ratio in classrooms.

“Yun iba po riyo mababakante in the middle of the school year simply because of the retirement, resignation ng mga  teachers po natin pero continuous po ‘yung hiring natin,” he added.

Mateo expressed optimism that the positions will be filled up by 2021.

Due to the COVID-19 threat, the DepEd decided to resume classes through blended learning, where students do not have to go to school to participate in classes to avoid possible transmission of the virus.

It also removed around 60% of the curriculum to adjust for the remote learning approach this coming school year, which was moved from August 24 to October 5.

The department has been preparing for ways to deliver education to students through self-learning modules, broadcast media, and the internet. -NB, GMA News
