Content creator urges Gen Z, millennials to register to vote

A content creator and voter education advocate said being vocal on social media is not enough as words must be translated into actions.

Yani Villarosa made the statement as she urged millennials and Gen Z eligible voters to register and make change happen in 2022.

“Mas malaki pala responsibilidad na mayroon ako kahit isang boto lang ‘yon. Hindi ko ‘yon nagawa before kasi tingin ko okay na ‘yong mag-ingay sa social media. I could’ve done more. I could’ve done better,” Villarosa, who is among the individuals who launched an online youth movement called “We The Youth Vote” said.

“Mayroong mga tao na hindi talaga makapagpa-register pero tayo na may access, bakit hindi pa natin i-grab ‘yong opportunity na bumoto?,” she added.

Based on We The Youth Vote’s research, about 40 million of eligible voters in 2022 are Gen Z and millennials.

Commission on Elections commissioner Rowena Guanzon also urged young people to vote and choose leaders wisely.

“Young people should think about their future and that future is directly tied to jobs and the economy,” she said.

“Also, it’s the first election after a pandemic. In a crisis, you can see who are the leaders who know how to respond, to create solutions. You have to vote and choose your leaders well,” she added.

COMELEC reopened its offices for voter registration in early September.

Filipinos aged 18 and above and those who will turn 18 years old by May 22 can register and take part in the upcoming elections.

The registration will run until September 30, 2021.
