Philippines now has over 2k COVID-19 clusters, says DOH

There are now 2,075 clusters of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases being monitored nationwide, the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday.

Eighty-four percent or 1,749 of the clusters were located within communities, 105 were in healthcare facilities, 36 were in prisons or jails, and 185 were found in other settings.

“The regions with [the] highest number of areas with clustering were NCR, Region 4A, Region 7, and Region 3,” the DOH said.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines a cluster as an “aggregation of cases in a given area over a particular period without regard to whether the number of cases is more than expected.”

A total of 556 clusters were found in Metro Manila, 461 of which were within communities, 37 were in healthcare facilities, 12 were in prisons or jails, while 46 were located in other settings.

The DOH identified 421 clusters of COVID-19 cases in Region 4A, 391 of which were found within communities, seven in healthcare facilities, four in prisons or jails, and 19 in other settings.

Region 7 had 209 clusters as of September 27, 193 of which were identified within communities, four in healthcare facilities, seven in prisons or jails, and five in other settings.

The DOH also found 188 clusters of infection in Region 3, 173 of which were within communities, three were in healthcare facilities, four were in prisons or jails, and eight were in other settings.

The Philippines has recorded 307,288 COVID-19 cases as of Monday afternoon, still the highest across Southeast Asia. -NB, GMA News
