Pro-Velasco solons gather anew ahead of House special session

Supporters of Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco on Tuesday once again gathered at Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City ahead of the expected special session of the House of Representatives to resume tackling the proposed 2021 national budget.

In a phone interview with GMA News Online, Valenzuela City Representative Eric Martinez, who will be attending the gathering, said Velasco is expected to address his fellow lawmakers in the venue about the budget.

Velasco was "elected" as Speaker by 186 House members in this same venue on Monday.

"The new Speaker will address the congressmen, the new majority of Lord Allan Velasco. Definitely madi-discuss dito, today is about budget day na," he said.

"The smoke has cleared, the new intramurals is behind us now, the political intramurals for the fight for speakership. The Speaker will address us and talk about the budget," he added.

Martinez said House Committee on Appropriations chair Eric Yap was also at the gathering to discuss the budget with lawmakers.

He added that the lawmakers will then proceed to the Batasang Pambansa Complex, although he did not mention what time.

"Our group expects a peaceful transition of the speakership. Gaya ng sinabi ko kahapon, the rule of numbers will do the talking for us and the rule of numbers has been shown and it is now reflected, pretty evident," Martinez said.

The House special session is expected to begin at 3 p.m.

Yap earlier said he has prepared two scenarios for the resumption of the plenary deliberations on the budget, "tailor-made" to what Velasco and Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano would want.

Cayetano has refused to recognize the result of the "session" at Celebrity Sports Plaza on Monday.

"Yung isa naka-tailor-made kung ibabalik ng second reading which is yun yung sinasabi lagi ni Speaker Velasco. Yung isa naman naka-tailor-made kay Speaker Cayetano na we will push through with third reading," he said.

"Dalawang scenario yan. Mamili sila. Kung sino talaga ang magiging Speaker... yun ang gagawin natin," he added. — RSJ, GMA News
