Senate, Red Cross to hold blood donation drive in honor of ex-Sen. Alvarez

A mobile blood donation drive will be held in the Senate on Thursday, in honor of the late Senator Heherson Alvarez.

Philippine Red Cross (PRC) chairman and Senator Richard Gordon said the activity is pursuant to a resolution adopted by the chamber last May 5 which declares the birth and death anniversaries of their colleague as blood donation day in the Senate.

Alvarez would have turned 81 this Friday, October 16, and the activity was slated a day ahead of it as senators will likely hold their last session on Thursday before they go on a month-long break.

The former statesman's daughter previously requested that the Senate hold blood donation drives in honor of him, according to Gordon.

"The Red Cross is glad and honored to do it as this is our way of remembering his exemplary life and outstanding contributions to our nation as a legislator championing and authoring bills that seek to protect the environment," Gordon said.

The senator encouraged his colleagues and their staff to participate as he underscored that their blood donations would go a long way especially as the COVID-19 pandemic affected mass blood donation drives.
