Nurse who helped homeless woman give birth in Makati honored

A group of Filipino nurses has honored the company nurse who recently helped a homeless woman give birth on a street in Makati City for her "selfless and heroic" deed.

Mary Lorrainne Pingol received the 2020 Bayaning Nars award from the Philippine Nurses Association "in recognition of her selfless and heroic deed in helping a homeless mother giving birth to her newborn before the rescue team arrived."

According to the citation, Pingol "exemplified bravery, professionalism, caring, and integrity beyond her call of duty."

It was Pingol who cut and clamped the umbilical cord of the baby, and then made sure the woman delivered the placenta. This was crucial, as the placenta may cause bleeding if it was not expelled from the body.

"Her extraordinary deed is truly an epitome of pride and inspiration to the nursing profession," Pingol's citation read.

Pingol's act went viral on social media. It was also later learned that she was a leukemia survivor, making her  immunocompromised.

PNA honored Pingol in an online convention on Tuesday as part of its celebration for its 98th anniversary.

The award is voted upon yearly by members of the PNA, the country's accredited organization of nurses, to honor their  colleagues who made the profession proud. —KBK, GMA News
