20 Customs personnel dismissed, hundred others under probe over alleged illegal activities

A total of 20  personnel allegedly involved in illegal activities have been dismissed following the investigation and filing of cases conducted by the Bureau of Customs.

BOC said four more personnel have been suspended while four others have been reprimanded.

"The Bureau of Customs (BOC) remains strongly committed in implementing policy reforms to rid the Bureau of corruption by taking stringent actions against errant Customs personnel allegedly involved in illegal practices," it said in a press statement Thursday.

It said from January 2019 to October 26, 2020, 228 Customs personnel were served with show-cause orders, of which 135 were investigated by the BOC–Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS).

As a result, 45 customs personnel were charged with administrative cases before the BOC–Legal Service. This further resulted in the filing of seven criminal cases before the Department of Justice, 157 cases before the Office of the Ombudsman, and 28 cases before the National Bureau of Investigation.

The BOC said a total of 26 cases are still pending hearing before BOC’s Legal Service, 142 are pending before the Office of the Ombudsman, and seven before the DOJ. There are also 28 cases and 95 cases pending investigation before the NBI and BOC, respectively.

Meanwhile, 708 personnel have been reshuffled to various offices from January 1 to October 26. Of this, 62 were relieved from duty or on floating status.

“The BOC aims to send a clear and firm message to all Customs personnel doing unlawful activities that the Bureau will be relentless, unwavering, and serious with its efforts to weed out misfits in the agency,” it said.

“The Bureau further enjoins the public to provide information regarding illegal and irregular activities committed by BOC personnel in their daily performance of duties,” it added.—AOL, GMA News
