President Rodrigo Duterte has congratulated the military after seven members of the Abu Sayyaf Group were killed following an encounter in Sulu Sea last week.

In a speech in Malacañang on Monday, Duterte lauded the operation by the military's Joint Task Force Sulu against the group led by Mundi Sawadjaan and Radullan Sahiron.

Two of the fatalities in the November 3 operation were believed to be brothers of Sawadjaan, who allegedly orchestrated the deadly bombings in Jolo in August.

“These men were reportedly en route to conduct a kidnapping operation in Surigao province. Despite unfavorable conditions, our troops from the [Western Mindanao Command-Joint Task Force Sulu] bravely undertook air and sea interdiction operations that led to this victory,” Duterte said.

“As your Commander-in-Chief, I commend and salute you for your gallantry, your vigilance and commitment in defeating these terrorists and ensuring the safety and security of our nation, which is really truly inspiring,” he added.

Duterte also reiterated his administration’s support to the military and police through programs that will further improve their capacity to respond to the security needs of the country.

“Your dedication to sworn duty strongly affirms this administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguard our people and maintain peace and security in the country,” he said.—AOL, GMA News
