Philippines’ COVID-19 cases breach 400,000

The Philippines’ coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) tally rose to 401,416 on Wednesday after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,672 new infections as eight laboratories failed to submit data on time.

The areas with the highest number of new cases were Cavite with 100, Davao City with 99, Quezon City with 81, Batangas with 78, and Baguio City with 70.

Meanwhile, the total number of recoveries rose to 362,217 after 311 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease.

The death toll also climbed to 7,710 with 49 new fatalities.

The remaining 31,489 are active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, 83.3% of which are mild, 9.4% are asymptomatic, 2.5% are severe, and 4.6% are in critical condition.

Experts from the OCTA Research group earlier said the positivity rate in outbreak epicenter Metro Manila has gone down to the World Health Organization’s benchmark of 5 percent.

However, they also observed an upward trend in the number of new cases recently, but added that it was unclear whether the rise was caused by the gradual reopening of the economy or the resumption of COVID-19 testing by the Philippine Red Cross.
